The Children of Case de Luz

To read the story of why and how Casa de Luz came into being, click HERE

Almost all of the twenty children at Casa de Luz have physical and/or neurological challenges from birth which were exacerbated by their home environment.   Most of the children cannot walk, speak, or feed themselves.

Ruth

Ruth, age 5, was born with deformities and her young mother would drop her off at a park each day hoping someone would feed her.  Project Child found her on a dirt floor limp and lifeless. Ruth first learned to stand and today she is walking!

Elisa

Elisa’s mother was age 13 at Elisa’s  birth and mentally unstable. Elisa’s legs and hands were deformed but she has the sweetest smile on the planet! Project Child has paid for two surgeries on Elisa’s legs and is hoping for  an orthopedic evaluation in the U.S.

Alex

Alex came to us during March 2007 along with four other children. His family was unable to properly care for him financially or physically. They pleaded with Project Child to take Alex until they could take him back, but no one has come for him.

 Ulises

Ulises’ mother was mentally ill and his father was gone frequently. With no food in the house, Ulises and his sisters were left alone for weeks at a time with very little food or water or adult supervision.  Ulises came to Casa de Luz in March 2007.

Lidia

Lidia lived with her mentally ill grandmother under a bridge in a dirt pile. Project Child found her in the worst health condition of any child, with sores and bruises from head to foot. Now she is healthy and happy and brings new life to the home with her sunny disposition.

Leunier

Leunier, almost 12, is severely handicapped, unable to sit up in spite of much physical therapy.  But  he has a smile as big as Cuba and is a very gentle spirited child.  He and sister Tania also arrived to Casa de Luz in June 2007, on the same day.

Juanita

Juanita’s body was completely stiff and lacking in hygiene when Project Child picked her up from a dark, tin shack in Janurary 2007.  She is now age 12 and  receiving the physical therapy and love that she needs.

Massiel

Massiel was from an abusive home and did not receive the surgeries needed early on to enable her to walk alone.  She was the first child to arrive at Casa de Luz in 2006. She is a bright teenager now and has accepted Jesus. Massiel loves to sing and pray.

Yohanna

Yohanna, though born healthy, suffered from polio at an early age. Thus, she is mentally and physically challenged as a result of the polio.  Casa de Luz employed her mom as a caregiver for several years so that the family ties remain as Yohanna receives constant care and plenty of love.

Rubi

Rubi is 3 years old and has hydro encephalitis.  Their father left the family when Rubi was born. The children often went without food as her mother had to feed her and all of her siblings. Rubi came to Casa de Luz in February 2009 and Project Child is searching for medical help for Rubi, both in the Dominican Republic and in the United States.
