| Why Project Child?Discovery of Atrocities
.....in the words of Lourdes Valladares
"The need for this project was revealed to me in 1999 as a friend took me to a special place in the Dominican Republic. Tucked away on the third floor of an orphanage in a dilapidated building in the center of Santo Domingo, we found over 90 severely disabled children. They were in a place without working toilets, running water, or air conditioning, in the sweltering tropical heat." | | | "This was a privately run orphanage, which had a reputation for neglecting special needs children. These children were all suffering from neurological diseases, which prevented them from caring for themselves. Their little bodies were twisted and grotesquely distorted. When I first visited this orphanage, I thought that the children were dying of AIDS." | | | "I soon learned, however, that what they were dying of was hunger, lack of care and medical attention, and neglect. The children were fed every other day. Every one of them was malnourished and dehydrated, and many were literally at death's doorstep. Many of these children were kept in cages, tethered to beds like animals, and they were all living in sub-human conditions." | | | "I knew we had to do something to feed and care for these children. Returning home, my husband Frank and I formed Project ChildHelp, Inc., a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization in September of 1999." | | | For the rest of the story, Click Here to see Our History | |
